Also known as Nahoum's, this Jewish  confectionery shop has been the part of calcutta's heritage since the last 110 years. Located in New Market, previously known as Hogg Market, it has maintained the same look and feel ever since it was opened in 1902. Many people in this city still swear by their rich fruit cake, plum cake, fudge, brownies, tarts and other baked products. The shop has maintained its vintage look over the ears and has not changed it at all. Unlike the new age confectionery shops we have around the city, Nahoum's is built more like those Shops where items are displayed on shelves and you can have look while walking past the shop also. The showcases made of teak, have been a part of the shop ever since it was opened. The inside is quite spacious and one can go around surfing items and selecting their choicest pick.

Inside Nahoum's 

The most sought after items of Nahoum's are its rich fruit cake, Brownies, Tarts, Marzipaans, Fudge, Rum Balls, Cheese samosa, Chicken puffs, Macaroons and many more. Almost each and every item has got its own specialty. The rich fruit cake is the highest selling item during winter and there are long queues to grab a piece of it. Made with original fruits and their age old recipe, it has got a shelf life of about 3 weeks. A 2 pound rich fruit cake or plum cake will cost around Rs.440. The brownies, tarts, and fudges are equally good.

Items like cheese samosa, mutton samosa, chicken puff and other salty products serves the taste of all. Most of the items are made on the age old recipe that is kept a secret, and it has been like this ever since Nahoum's opened up. The rum ball is a bit sweet but the aroma of rum and the nutty chocolaty feeling once you put it in your mouth, is worth a try. The brownies are different from those which are available in other confectionery shops throughout the city, as they are more brittle in nature yet tastes very good. A piece of it comes at Rs.28.

Other bakery items like, bread, biscuits, buns, cheese sticks are also available. Be it brown, garlic or cheese bread, they taste much better and different than other packaged breads we get from the shops. The sweet buns are dotted with fruits and topped with ample amount of sugar and is a great filler. The biscuits and cookies are available in various flavors like orange, ginger, chocolate, butter, etc.You may carry all of these delicacies to your home and enjoy them or if you cant resist it then try some of them at the shop itself before packing a good amount for home. The price is not that high and is quite reasonable.

Khandani Rajdhani, the Vegetarian Thali Restaurant located on the top floor of Mani Square mall treats you with delightful and homely atmosphere and hospitality. It is also present in Avani Riverside mall of Howrah. You get welcomed here by a staff in Rajasthani Attire, who marks a “Sandalwood Tikka” on your forehead. The waiters here will treat you royally as soon as you walk into this place, they promptly presents himself with a brass pitcher full of water to wash your hands so that you don’t have to get up from your seats, its an experience there on. After this they start their services and they bombard you with food.

The Gujarati Thali with an exquisitely delicious Bajra Roti with ghee and jaggery is lip-smacking. For the Rajasthani Thali, they serve 20-30 unique items starting from different kinds of Beverages to desserts. Since there are so many items they pronounce each and every item while serving so that you can relate. Dry fruits, cardamom, rose water and ginger form the basis of almost every curry which was served. The service was outstanding and there was a constant refill as soon as I finish my dish without even lifting my head. Each and every dish was piping hot, fresh and extremely delectable. There were a couple of things that stood out like Panner ki Sabji, Kacche aam ki Sabji, Meethi dal, chane Jaisalmer ke, Dal baati, churma, missi roti and one of the favourite is “chhaas”. There were so many things that were being served in small quantities that not only is it difficult to recall what all you had, but you inevitably end up overeating. There is so no particular fixed menu. Rajdhani serves different meals everyday. The Thali costs approximately Rs. 350 on weekdays and Rs. 400 on weekends (inclusive of taxes).

It's a place where while leaving, you'll be quite tempted to go ring the thali at the entrance (thali bajao - their way of saying the food was good), and the waiters will scream back "aao jo" - meaning come again. You certainly will!! Check out their official website for more information.

HAKA is the ideal place for people who like to have a low-priced Chinese buffet meal. The food here has its own unique taste which is quite different from the Chinese Restaurants of Chinatown (Tangra). It is another restaurant of the Speciality Group, which are the owners of Mainland China. It also has a la carte menu, which has a few takers. The buffet menu has both good numbers of vegetarian and non-veg dishes. For a large group of persons over 10 or 15, it would be a good choice to go for buffet, where each one can have his / her food at their own choice of food from the buffet items, rather than to waste time in making a long list of orders going through the menu. The waiters are well mannered and if informed to them while placing an order, they even provide complimentary cakes and sing “Happy Birthday” songs for anyone who has a birthday. Alcohol and drinks are also available at fairly moderate price. Usually the non-veg buffet dinner menu, costing Rs. 350 (plus taxes) has more or less, the following items; however sometimes the dessert items are changed to some other:
