Biriyani |
Shiraz is one of the most
renowned restaurants in Kolkata that is well-known for its exceptional biryani.
That is not to say that it’s not known for chaaps, kebabs and Tandoori Chicken;
they are as famous as the Kolkata Biryani that they make. Kolkata's biriyani is
different from its Lucknowi or Hyderabadi cousins! But as a hard-core food
addict, I swear by Kolkata's Biriyani to be the tastiest amongst the 3 cousins.
Blame it on my palate or partiality towards Kolkata - but for biriyani, I would
rather wait for a seat at Shiraz Kolkata than at Abid's or Paradise at
Hyderabad. A very contentious topic in Kolkata "where to get the best
BIRIYANI?". Kolkata Food lovers swear by their favourite joints and very
often, this becomes a topic for a heated argument. I know many other Kolkatans
would instantly think of some of its closest competitors like Arsalan, Nizam’s
or Aminia being better that Shiraz, but I am a die-hard fan of Shiraz when it
comes to biriyani! The rice used in Shiraz's biriyani is slender, smooth and
unbroken. And then when you take a spoonful of its mutton or chicken biriyani,
it almost melts in your mouth! Legend has it that biriyani was never made with
chicken - only recently has the modern Bong demanded the "lesser
evil" chicken over mutton - and hence we have chicken biriyani.
Chicken Reshmi Butter Masala & Tandoori Roti |
In the last three decades, Shiraz
has made the humble potato a reality in the Mughal treat of rice and tender
meat that is fit for royalty. Recently, they shifted to a place across the road
and smartened up the interiors, but the familiarity is still there: the same old
smiling waiters and the menu. They now have a clean centrally air-conditioned
restaurant which just make it easier to visit and eat there itself instead of
having it packed and taken away as one had to do earlier because the restaurant
was never as clean as now. In its old place the more sophisticated 3-star
version of Shiraz known as Dawaat-e-Shiraz stands at present. Now it has nice
sofas and cushioned chairs with white marble tables spread across two floors.

The menu still features korma,
Irani Chaap, Murg
Musallam, Mutton Rezala, Fish Pudina, Fish Afghani and other various
kinds of kababs. Mutton Kashas with Parathas is a great
experience. Try the Chicken Kati Kababs with Lachha Paratha and Onion Salad or
mutton roganjosh with rumali roti. During Ramjan period, they make a special
smoky broth made of various dal with chicken or Mutton - The Halim. Both
Chicken & Mutton Biriyani comes at Rs. 130, Chiken Malai Tikka kabab (5
pcs) is Rs. 150, Chicken reshmi Butter masala (5 pcs) is Rs. 150, Chicken
Tangri Kabab (2 pcs) is Rs. 120 and 4 pcs is Rs. 200 and Tandoori roti is Rs.
10. As a tail ender one must have the sweet dish, Firni (Rs.30) which is served
in earthen saucers. All prices are tax inclusive. The food is pretty cheap as
compared to its quality. Meal for two comes to around Rs. 400-500. Getting a
table in busy lunch hours may take time as this place is always crowded. While
coming back home, do pick up a bottle of fizzy drink or digestive tabs for the
immediate effect from heaviness that follows from a Mughlai meal. In this era
of Pizza, Hot Dogs & Burgers, Mughal dishes are still number one in my
opinion and therefore I recommend this place as a must visit for all.
