Wise owl is one of those hangout spots where you can relax and watch time fly by without even knowing. If you are looking for a place to sit and relax and also tuck into some food over a long period of time, then pay a visit to wise owl.  Located in the heart of south Kolkata, yet in a quiet part of Gariahat known as the Purna Das Road, this is a place where you would like to come back time and again. With both outdoor and indoor seating area, it can accommodate 30 people at a time. The outdoor lounge area is the most sought after and remains filled up since it is well decorated with plants and wall paintings, allowing a view of the road. Once seated you may light a smoke (yes, smoking is allowed in the outdoor seating area). The ambience of the interior quarter is plain and simple somewhat elegant. With wall paintings adorning the wall and soft music playing in the cool AC air. There is a shelf having all the different kinds of owl sculptures or show pieces. The crowd is a good mix of teenagers to working women to septuagenarians.

Grilled Chicken with Mushrooms Sauce

Though the name says “Wise Owl, The Coffee Shop”, the menu makes it something more than that. With a wide range of foods, starting from breakfast meal to desserts, it is like a continental food joint. The breakfast menu had oats, cereals, various types of egg omelets and poaches, shakes and fries.  I was intrigued to find that they serve Maggi in three different flavors. That is hot garlic, Thai style and schezwan.  The choice of burgers and sandwiches are also good with an equal mix of Veg and Non-Veg items. They serve two sandwiches in each plate, i.e. four triangular pieces in each plate along with potato chips and ketchup.

 The starters have got French fries, spring roll, mushroom cheese roll, baby corn, chicken wings and many other lip smacking items. The main courses have an eclectic mix of lasagna, pasta, and Chinese cuisine. The beverages are like in any other coffee shop with an array of coffees both hot and cold, mocktails, juices and soda based drinks. The dessert section contains really sinful items starting from chocolate muffins, to brownies, sundaes and puddings. But the dessert to lookout for is the Avalanche which comes in a big bowl containing scoops of chocolate ice cream at the base and vanilla ice cream on top of it, topped with a rich chocolate brownie covered in chocolate sauce and chocolate chips sprinkled all over along with two wafer sticks.

 Though the food and ambience was very good I was quite disappointed with the service. That is because they take a long time to serve the ordered food and sometimes confuse the items too. Though the waiters are well behaved and co-operate, the place needs an efficient mangers. A meal for two will cost Rs.500 approx. In spite of its drawbacks I liked the place and would love to come back again and the best part I liked is that they serve bottled mineral water at mrp.
