Perhaps Kobe Sizzlers is the only Restaurant in Kolkata which devotes to serving only Sizzlers apart from sandwiches and a few starters. Situated in the heart of City Center Salt Lake, Kobe Sizzlers is the true flavor of the very contemporary European grills and steaks. They have been the oldest Sizzler restaurant chain in India since it opened its door in Mumbai in 1975. They now have over 19 outlets in not only cities of India but abroad as well. Thick wooden tables, jute stringed chairs and modern abstract paintings on the wall make the décor. Interesting pieces of intricate wooden artwork separate each table from one another. There are cushioned long low benches on one side which maybe a bit uncomfortable for those requiring a back rest. The ambiance is pretty sophisticated.

Nicely sited on the rooftop, Hangout is the Food Court at City Centre Salt Lake, one of the oldest and most popular malls in Kolkata. Dishing out Italian pastas, Continental sizzlers, Chinese momos, North Indian Kebabs, South Indian dosas to Bombay Pav Bhaji, it is a multi cuisine self-service restaurant. It is split in two sections; the outside section is open air where plastic tables are laid under massive umbrellas and from where you get a good view of the Salt Lake locality. The other section is air-conditioned having all the food counters surrounding a central region with chessboard tiled floors, steel tables and green & black plastic chairs. Complete in bright colors, there is certain warmth in this place which builds up a sparkling tone.

Le Coffee Crème is a newly opened Continental - Oriental café cum Hookah joint at the ground floor of a residential house opposite City Centre just beside Mehfil. The location is wonderful to appeal to the shopping crowd though it serves only Vegetarian dishes. The entrance is not right on the road but inside a pavement garage of the building. Right on entering, the small room decorated with stylish automobile photographs on colored wall papers with couches and small wooden tables can easily be mistaken for a waiting area to the real dining area. But it is actually just another room for serving guests like the other two interior ones: One lounge space to the left is neatly done up with pristine interiors, leather cushioned seating, fancy woodwork, Buddha statues, graphic wall paper, silk carpet, cute suspended bar counter. And another region for hookah smoking folks, which is straight ahead, having big LCD screen TV and wall sofas for cozy evenings.

Wow! Momo is a fast food restaurants chain based largely in Kolkata, which offers mainly momo, a dumpling originating from Nepal & Tibet and thukpa. It was established in 2008 by Sagar Daryani and Binod Homagai, alumni of St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. It has spread across to the cities of Chennai, Pune, Bangalore and Coimbatore. As of end 2011, it has expanded to more than 20 outlets in India.

Situated opposite to City Center (Salt Lake), right beside Le Coffee Crème, this branch of Mehfil specializes in serving fast foods like Kati Kebab Rolls, Biriyani, Kebabs, Tandoori items, apart from regular Mughlai dishes of Rezala, Korma, Chap, Kasha (both Chicken & Mutton). The shop is very small with seating arrangement of just 2 tables inside. However they have placed few chairs outside on the footpath to handle City Center crowds during weekend evenings! They make rolls and other dishes right in front of the customers which is visible through the glass panes. The Rolls have a price range of Rs. 25 – 100 and are pretty heavy & filling in comparison of evening snacks. They prepare using their kebabs very well for the rolls.

Located just opposite to the Inox side entrance of the boisterous City Centre, you just need to walk through the gigantic hallway of Gorkha Bhawan to reach Blue Poppy. This is the second outlet of this Tibetan momo joint turned Chinese Restaurant after its immense popularity of Maidan outlet (Middleton Row – Sikkim House). Not to mention it’s pocket friendly prices in both the outlets. One could get fried or steamed momos (8 pcs served with homemade red chilli sauce & Soup) at Rs. 80 inc. taxes which I doubt any other AC restaurants would offer. The menu offers Original Nepali Thali & Thukpa and also Bhutanese dishes apart from the regular Chinese section which is available in every Chinese joint that crops up at every crossroad of Kolkata.

Situated in the posh FD block, which is now mostly famous for the innovative Durga puja pandals that they design each year, this 160-seater air-conditioned bar-cum-restaurant, divided in 2 floors, is quite popular in Saltlake. Though the interior décor is ordinary with round wooden tables without table cloth and black cushioned metallic chairs, with dim lighting and no fancy curtains even, still this place becomes very crowded on weekends and evening time. The main reasons for this are because the restaurant is located in close proximity to both City Centre and the IT hub of Sector V, it serves delicious Chinese fare & Thai specialties and for possessing a liquor license so that is serves drinks to commoners at a pretty moderate rate. Chicken Pakora (Rs. 160 - 10 pcs) is a nice starter along with drinks. The foods which one must give a try are Cantonese Noodles, Shrimp Wanton Soup, Boneless Chili Garlic Chicken, American Chop Suey, Golden-fried Prawns and Kung Pao Chicken. Families troop into the ground floor section, while the first floor turns into a noisy bar: liquor, Prawn Chips, chili pork and Chili Chicken do the rounds. Parking Space is easy to find. Toilet may not be very clean at busy hours, but has normal facilities. The average food price for a group of three persons is Rs. 500- 600 including taxes. Beer costs around Rs. 150 (without taxes) and Indian Whiskeys in the range of Rs. 110-200. Overall this is a nice hangout place for a group of friends or even for family dining.

Zhilann - City Centre (Saltlake)

Zhilánn maybe small, with only a few tables, but is extensively decorated in Thai style with lamps and miniature statues, and Chinese scripts inscription. The stress is on authenticity of recipes from various provinces of China and beyond. Popular latest English hit songs are played in the background. The menu highlights a wide array of dishes from Canton to Sczhewan, Hunan to Hakka, Thai to Malaysian. The menu is elaborate with a wide variety for vegetarian as well. You can try out the tangy crispy chicken, the lamb in black pepper sauce, dimsums platters, ginger pimento fried rice, Hakka noodles, Prawn in Oyster sauce and other spicy Thai curries. The Thai food is really great to taste and the service is equally good with more than two persons always standing near the table. The sofas are comfortable with a lot of space. However the mocktails are not up to the mark as compared to its price. Desserts are also simple. I would rate it at 6.5 out of 10.

Pizza Hut - City Centre (Saltlake)

Pizza Hut, which completed 15 years in India, now has 131 restaurants across India in 34 cities. Out of the 8 in Kolkata, The city centre, CC 2, and Camac Street are dine-in, the rest being delivery / take away. The ambience is good, yellow printed lamp shades hang from the ceiling, ordinary wooden round tables with very soft cozy comfortable sofas. The service ladies are extremely helpful and well-behaved, but the food takes much time to prepare in busy hours. There are pizzas in many ranges, depending on your budget. You would surely love this place and its lip smacking pizzas, pastas, garlic breads, salads, desserts, mocktails and other Italian dishes. If you don’t want to spend much, you can opt for budget meals, for 2, 4, and 6. There is a meal for Rs. 129 per person that serves 1 pizza, 2 garlic breads and 1 beverage, each of which has a quite a no. of choices. HAKA is a restaurant from the Mainland China group which is located at many places like City Centre, Mani Square. Haka is good for the times you really want to eat Chinese food at a big restaurant but don't want to spend too much. Comparing to the price (Rs. 200 + Tax) it's a fine option for a descent oriental lunch buffet, which serves Soup, 5 salads, 2 veg starters, 1 veg wonton, 1 veg side dish, 2 chicken side dish (1 with bone + 1 wihout bone), 1 fried Rice, 1 Noodles, 1 darshan, 1 ice cream (usually vanilla with chocolate sauce). The price might be a bit higher on weekends. However only à la carte menu is present at dinner and bar closes at 10-30 pm, last order of food taken at 11 pm. You can definitely try out Chilli Satay Fish, spicy crabmeat fried rice, chicken in oyester sauce, salt & pepper prawn. The place has a theme colour of Red & Black, and only these colors are used for chairs, tables, water jugs, waiter’s dress code and walls. There are paintings of Chinese women having chow with chopsticks on the walls. The service is moderate. It is a budget eatery (not very cozy) with simple chair & tables.

The Sonnet is a wonderful 4-star hotel located on DD block of Saltlake, near City Centre, which opened a year ago. It provides many facilities like business centre, car service, Wi-Fi, 24 hour coffee shop, Jacuzzi pool, gym, banquet hall, parking space and others. It has a stylish poolside lounge called ORION with dance floor & DJ, perfect for an intimate party. The bar called, UNWINE, offers an impeccable selection of liquors, wines & cocktails. AURA is the restaurant which has a lavish ambience and serves Indian, continental & Oriental cuisines. The central air conditioning provides moderate temperature; the interiors are royally decorated with perfect lighting, plush sofas, comfy chairs, marble tables and expensive cutlery. Waiters are well-dressed & friendly. The dinner buffet is really excellent especially the veg & chicken kebabs and Vetki Fish fries. There is also biriyani, mutton and chowmein apart from various kinds of salads. The desserts are yummy. The per head cost is Rs. 700 (including taxes) on a weekend, however its lesser on weekdays. The no. of items in the buffet should be increased if they want to compete with other star hotels, though I wouldn’t mind if the price becomes a bit higher.
