On Track - Mirza Ghalib St. (Free School St.)

On Track is cool for kids as it has an artificial railway bogey & an engine where a person sits & enjoys the food; Special effects of vibration & sound of train is also present to add a bit more . An almost full-sized steam train heads straight for the window offering parents a unique, up market dining experience in leather-seated Pullman carriages while the kids play in the locomotive. Over-keen waiters flock like vultures but food standards vary. Apart from all this the paneer butter masala, Crispy chilly baby corn rocks! I should also mention that this place is a little less known in Park Street area but is worth visiting.

Tung Fong- Mirza Ghalib St. (Free School St.)

Tung Fong serves authentic Chinese as their main cuisine. I discovered that Tung Fong is run by a Chinese family from Tangra. They also run Kimling & Beijing at Tangra. The ambience is quite elegant & it is one of the very few restaurants in that area which has a buffet in the afternoon; it is economical, tasty and has loads of items from different types of salads, starters, Sweet Corn Soup (veg) & Thai soup (non-veg), veg wanton, crispy baby corn, dim sums, fried mushroom, chili potato, red chilly chicken, smoked lamb, garlic prawns, Yang Chu fried rice, Hakka noodles, Honey Glazed Chicken, Kung Pao Prawn, Thai Garlic Fish other gravy side dishes. It also serves complimentary beverage from choices of beer, lime soda, aerated drinks & others. There is vanilla ice-cream with hot chocolate sauce as dessert in the buffet apart from fruits. I had once invited many friends to this place on my birthday. The buffet price per head at that time was around Rs.280, but now it has risen to Rs. 456 (inclusive of taxes)*. In the night, there is À la carte & it is advisable to avoid the weekends as there is rush, which is natural due to the low costs but the thing is the waiting time there is very high and that is not because of heavy rush, but because the service turn around time is very high there. If possible do a telephonic reservation, but as we know, Bengalis go for dinner unplanned as the way it should be!

Drumstick - Beliaghata CIT More

Drumstick is located in a busy locality having markets, old houses and the main route for auto & buses passing between kankurgachi & sealdah. It is a small (about 7-9 tables) A/C multi-cuisine restaurant that boasts of the best quality food available in that area. Customer traffic is less during lunch time and hence with only a handful of waiters, service is good. It is heavily curtained on all of its inside walls and one can hardly say whether its sunny or cloudy outside during daytime. Chicken / mutton biriyani is the best dish here, which is served in Handi in a profuse quantity, consisting of a large piece of chicken / mutton, meat balls, potato & egg (At Rs. 100). Chicken Tandoori should be taken as starter (half or full). Along with that try Chicken tengri kebab masala (Rs. 180), this is simply luscious and yummy. Other kebabs like reshmi, tikka, kati, hariyali are also good. If you want to have tandoori roti / butter naan, then try out chicken bharta (comes with egg) as side dish! The Chinese dishes are average type. The cost of a meal for 2 persons is approximately Rs. 400- 450 (inclusive of taxes). Toilet is clean. However finding parking could be difficult during busy hours. The velvet sofas are soft, but the leg spacing is less due to the small area of the place.

HAKA is a restaurant from the Mainland China group which is located at many places like City Centre, Mani Square. Haka is good for the times you really want to eat Chinese food at a big restaurant but don't want to spend too much. Comparing to the price (Rs. 200 + Tax) it's a fine option for a descent oriental lunch buffet, which serves Soup, 5 salads, 2 veg starters, 1 veg wonton, 1 veg side dish, 2 chicken side dish (1 with bone + 1 wihout bone), 1 fried Rice, 1 Noodles, 1 darshan, 1 ice cream (usually vanilla with chocolate sauce). The price might be a bit higher on weekends. However only à la carte menu is present at dinner and bar closes at 10-30 pm, last order of food taken at 11 pm. You can definitely try out Chilli Satay Fish, spicy crabmeat fried rice, chicken in oyester sauce, salt & pepper prawn. The place has a theme colour of Red & Black, and only these colors are used for chairs, tables, water jugs, waiter’s dress code and walls. There are paintings of Chinese women having chow with chopsticks on the walls. The service is moderate. It is a budget eatery (not very cozy) with simple chair & tables.
