Calcutta Club is a social club
located on Lower Circular Road in Kolkata. It was established in 1907 and the first
president of the club was H.H. The
Maharajah of Cooch Behar. Although not the oldest private members club in
the city, it is notable because it was formed at a time when the existing
Bengal Club only admitted whites as members. Lord Minto, the Viceroy of India
at the time, had wished to invite Rajen Mookerjee to dine at the Bengal Club
and, when the discriminatory policy was thus exposed, a decision was taken to
form a club with a membership policy not dictated by race. The Calcutta Club
remains a popular social hub for the wealthy in the city. Ironically, despite its
origins as a reaction to discrimination, the club has historically restricted
membership to men. However, this was changed in 2007 and the club started
admitting women members.

The Main
Dining Hall of the club, also known as the Coffee Room, serves continental dishes and genuine English dinner.
It is very brightly lit with old hanging chandeliers. Though it is a huge hall
with two connected chambers with a high ceiling, the centrally air-conditioning
system keeps the sections cool for the club members & their guests. Drinks
like mocktails, cocktails, alcoholic beverages like beer, wine, whiskey, vodka (both Indian & Imported) are served here. Light colored
long curtains, vintage wooden chairs, waiters in traditional attire & fine
art paintings on walls give a historic British environment to the interiors.
For the starters you can try out Chicken
Corn Soup (Rs. 45) & Prawn
Cutlets (Rs. 80 per piece). In the main course, you may like Bekti Vernique (Rs. 140 per plate)
(This is basically like Fish n Chips – fish fry, French fries & boiled
carrot peas salad), and Chicken Mont
Blanc (Rs. 135 per plate) (This has strong resemblance with Grilled Chicken
in Mushroom Sauce with Mashes potatoes).

Lounge:
The premium lounge in the central region of
the club, which is open for people to sit and relax at all times, is just
beside the lawn. It has a bar and provides facilities of snacks and Italian
dishes. It has plush leather sofas which are very spongy & comfy and also a
massive LCD screen which plays live sports matches. Though the section is not
air-conditioned, and the fans are really high above, light breeze flows in the
evening time through the open corridors leading to the lush green lawns.Central Lounge Interiors |
Chicken Cutlet |
After a swim in the pool, or a round of
badminton match, you could order juices
like pineapple, apple, orange, mango to quench your thirst. You can also
order mocktails like mojito, bloody
mary, screwdriver and others. To go around with alcoholic beverages, there
are snacks like Chicken Cutlet and Dry Mutton Fry, both of which are
served with French Fries. Not to
mention the Italian Pastas & Pizzas or the Kebabs.
