Mitra Cafe (Sovabazar Crossing)

Mitra Cafe Restaurant at Sovabazar North Kolkata
Mitra Cafe entrance

Carrying on the legacy for more than 100 years, this quintessential bengali food joint is a place you should not miss. Located near Sovabazar metro station, Mitra Cafe is always crowded and one have to wait for at least 10 to 15 minutes before getting a table. The takeaway counter also gets a long queue, thanks to the consistent assembly of regular customers who does not fail to grab their daily share of fried delicacies like fish fry, fish cutlet, chicken kabiraji, egg devil, veg chop and many more. Right from the afternoon the crowd starts pouring in.

The place is small with 16 chairs to seat. There's an A.C section also but that is also not so large in area. The service is prompt though the decor is nothing worth noticing. The important point these food joints portray is that quality food is what matters and good service. Every thing else is unimportant. The fish used in the various items is fresh and authentic, and every dish is well prepared and cooked so that there is no raw part inside. The most sought after dishes are fish diamond fry and fish batter fry, chicken kabiraji, veg chop, chicken finger, mutton chop, chicken soup and their specialty mutton brain chop.

The prices are higher compared to other such food joints in the area, but you wont feel the pinch as the food will completely occupy your mouth and mind. It will be better if they expand the sitting area since it gets stuffy at times. Otherwise you may opt for the takeaway also but it that case there's a chance of missing out on the delicious mustard sauce they serve along with every fried dish. Just pay a visit anytime in the afternoon or evening and experience the taste of real kolkata finger food. Another nostalgic journey down memory lane, for old Calcutta colonial cuisine.
