Potato Basket with chicken |
The Flying Monk, the name instantly catches
anyone by surprise! Situated near AJC
Bose Road, at Woodburne Park, this
Oriental restaurant specializes in South-East Asian (Japanese, Singaporean, Korean,
Malaysian, Indonesian, Thai) cuisine. It mainly targets the sophisticated
upper class of South Kolkata who would not mind to spend some extra to taste
innovative food from the South-East
Asian countries which are rarely available in stand-alone eateries (not
5-stars). The theme of the restaurant revolves around Chinese puzzles or
Tangrams and gives the ambiance a funky feel.
The interiors are made of wooden
beams, faux exposed brick walls on which large sized quirky art paintings have
been hanged. However the classy ambiance is turned down by the simple cushioned
wooden chairs & wooden tables. Jazz music is played in the backdrop which though
becomes monotonous to the ears after a while.

The menu is elaborate in variety & geography
and looks like a big heavy diary. You can start the meal with a sinful Death By Chocolate, a mocktail that
comes with a huge scoop of ice-cream sprinkled with chocolate shavings,
floating in a milky concoction. For appetizers
you may try Prawn Gyoza (Pan fried
dumpling stuffed with prawn & leek served with non-veg XO sauce), Grilled Basa fish with fresh herbs
(Basa fish marinated with fresh herbs char grilled and served with basil
mayonnaise), Grilled Asparagus &
Prawn with Chilli Oyster Sauce, Aromatic
Crispy Duck, Prawn & Crabmeat
with Almond Flakes. For Vegetarians,
must try Starters are Pok Choi – Tofu – Shitake Gyoza, Asparagus Dumpling, Crispy Konjee Shitake Mushroom, Rice Paper Roll.

For the Main Course which has adequate no. of
both Veg & Non-Veg items, you can try Stuffed
Aubergine in Chilli Ginger Sauce (Augerbine stuffed with mixed vegetables
batter fried and served with chilli Ginger sauce), The Stone Baked Tofu Asparagus Steak (Marinated in Japanese Miso
Sauce & cooked on a stone slab – A Vegetarian steak has seldom been
tastier!), Chicken Hot Pot (Cooked
in Red Wine, Japanese Soya & Honey, and flavored with star anise seeds –
it’s for those who like a dash of sweet balancing the spice), Potato Basket with chicken (Diced
Chicken leg marinated with salt & garlic powder tossed with black bean red
wine sauce and served on a potato nest), Chicken
in Homemade Laksa, Roasted Lamb.
The menu has a section dedicated to duck specialties like Aromatic crispy duck & Teriyaki

Noodles.

The desserts will uplift your mood. The sweetest
end to a flavorful meal is the Huoshan,
the divine balance of sinful dark chocolate cake with melted chocolate filling,
served with pure vanilla ice-cream. There is also Chocolate Velvet Cake & Crème
Brulee, which comes in 3 flavours – Regular, Coffee & Kahlua and
Cinnamon & Baileys. The entire Menu
is given below. The food is on the
costlier side, and the items are a bit over-priced. A complete meal for two persons will cost around Rs. 1800 (inc. Taxes).
Due to some liquor license problem, they serve drinks only on weekends, which is a major drawback. We had visited
this place on a birthday occasion, the waiters promised to give a complimentary
cake at the end to celebrate. But unfortunately, they added that item even to
the bill without informing us, which was kind of rude. Apart from that, we were
satisfied with the dinner!

WORST.PLACE.EVER.
ReplyDeleteI am a jain. I went there with my friends by the recommendation of couisn . I chose veg buffet... the first thing they served me was veg soup. After having few sips, they say that its non veg, n they served it by mistake. My worst nightmare came true today.
wish i could take a legal action against it.
I strongly suggest that no vegetarian should ever step in this shitty restro.
