The wine tasting event named Wine Trail was organised by Four Seasons in Kolkata on 6th july at the Conclave Club. It was a closed event with bloggers and food enthusiasts as guests. The main aim of Wine Trail was to make us aware of the wines produced by Four Seasons and available in India. The session was very interactive with question being asked around and also a lot of queries answered.
The Indian wine market is gradually growing and the quality of wines being produced is at par with the international level. We were taken through the whole process of making wine right from the point of the grapes being plucked to the wines being bottled and shipped to various units, with the help of audio visual presentations. Many new facts came into light and some prejudices were broken. Our host Mr. P.P.K Mitter welcomed us warmly and took us through the journey like a seasoned pilot and patiently answered all the questions thrown to him.
The three hour event consisted of two presentations and a wine tasting round. We were given five type of wines, of which two were white wines, one rose` wine and two red wines. Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier are the three types of White Wine in India that Four Seasons produce. Rose` gets its name from the color which is rosy red and is known as Blush. Four Seasons also produce a variety of Red Wines in India and they are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot. There are two reserve range red wines also and they are Barrique Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Barrique Reserve Shiraz. The red wines are dry as compared to the white wines which are mostly off dry. The term dry means that they are devoid of any type of sweetness. The ones with a little hint of sweetness is known as off-dry.
Since these wines have been produced by keeping in mind the Indian market, they pair well with Indian food and Asian food. The white wines that we tasted were Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. These wines pairs well with green vegetables, sprout based salads, seafood and fish dishes. Asian dishes and chicken items too.
The Blush wine goes best with spicy Indian dishes like tandoori and also international tomato based dishes. The dark red Shiraz compliments red meats, specially the barbecued ones. Last but not least the Barrique Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is the one to look out for. One of the award winning wines from Four Seasons it pairs best with roasted dishes like lamb, ham or cheeses like Comte and Beaufort.
There were also foods that accompanied the wines and they complemented the taste and nature of the wines. It was a happy learning and wine tasting experience and I am glad that I got the opportunity to be a part of such a wonderful event. The journey through the world of wines was really enriching and enchanting. If you are interested to know more about the produces of Four Seasons then visit the following links.
