Nicely sited on the rooftop, Hangout is the Food Court at City Centre Salt Lake, one of the oldest and most popular malls in Kolkata. Dishing out Italian pastas, Continental sizzlers, Chinese momos, North Indian Kebabs, South Indian dosas to Bombay Pav Bhaji, it is a multi cuisine self-service restaurant. It is split in two sections; the outside section is open air where plastic tables are laid under massive umbrellas and from where you get a good view of the Salt Lake locality. The other section is air-conditioned having all the food counters surrounding a central region with chessboard tiled floors, steel tables and green & black plastic chairs. Complete in bright colors, there is certain warmth in this place which builds up a sparkling tone.

One has to deposit Rs. 30 to get a Hangout Food Court card and provide some balance amount in cash to that card. Then you can use that card and purchase at any of the food counters. After that you can retain the card if you visit again or you can give that back to the cash counter and get back your available balance present in the card after purchases along with the extra deposit of Rs. 30. After placing an order, you have to get your food from that counter where you have ordered. The attendant at the counter usually calls you when your food has been prepared.

• Tea Junction (Serves different kinds of tea, coffee, snacks)

• Stun The Sun – Beat the heat retreat (Serves different kinds of desserts, shakes, chillers and mocktails. One of its favorite is Sizzling Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream priced at Rs. 155)

• Forty Nine (serves Sizzlers like Diced Spice Chicken and Thai fried chicken)

• Hot n Spice Chinese (Serves Chinese dishes apart from combo meals like Chicken / Fish platters having chicken starter, Chinese papads, Chicken Fried Rice / Noodles and a Chicken Gravy item such as Chicken Schezwan)

• Hidden Dragon (Serves Thai & Mughlai items like chicken tandoori and Biriyani. There is a Non-Veg Combo Meal (Crispy Chicken, Bar b q Chicken, Drumstick, Chicken Sausages) priced at Rs. 210)

• Kokonut (South Indian Delicacies like Mysore Masala Dosa)

• Yumie Tumie (serves native dishes from Bombay like Pav Bhaji, chats and puchka)

• The Claypot (Serves North Indian dishes, Kebabs, Chana Kulchha and combo meals)

• Pizza n Pasta (Serves Italian cuisine dishes like pasta, pizza, Chicken Stroganoff at affordable prices which would otherwise cost much more in a fine dining restaurant)

The staffs across the counters are quite instructive and helpful. Mineral water is available at all outlets at Rs. 30. Fizzy drinks like Coke & Pepsi in fountain costs Rs. 25. A complete meal for two persons along with beverages and desserts will cost as low as Rs. 350 - 400. Self-Service is the only disadvantage of food courts of big city malls. Mostly visited by youngsters and couples from nearby colleges and sector V office crowd, the food court is a good place to “hang out” and so it’s name. Avoid visiting on weekends as the place is usually filled to the brim and therefore it will be tough to get a table. The food quality has degraded considerably even though the prices have risen in the past few years, but the place still remains pretty active.
